Vasarely, the illusionist

As a visual artist, painter and theorist, Vasarely was determined to challenge the art of the easel and develop an art form that was "in tune with the times" and aimed at the widest possible audience. In his quest for "functional" art, he wanted his new kinetic plastic art to help beautify the city and thereby transform society. Today, he remains the celebrated inventor of Op art.
