In China's Zhejiang province, a strange animal crawls out of adobe. Wa Shan, literally "tile mountain", is a rather unusual guesthouse, built between 2011 and 2013 by Chinese architect Wang Shu. Winding along a river and disappearing in places behind wild vegetation, the guesthouse is set in a landscape of mountains and water. Wang Shu is a great scenographer and is renowned for his commitment to sustainable architecture. The guesthouse was built using recycled materials and rammed earth, a provocation in a country that concretes at every turn.
