Villa Dall'Ava

Villa Dall'Ava
The Villa Dall’Ava, designed by Rem Koolhaas in 1991, is an iconic project located on the heights of Saint-Cloud, near Paris. This house is distinguished by its bold architecture and geometric forms that challenge the traditional conventions of a typical villa. The structure consists of shifted volumes, with two apartment boxes appearing to float above the pool, creating an impression of lightness. Koolhaas faced significant technical and aesthetic challenges during the design of the villa. On one hand, he dealt with opposition from neighbors concerned about the visual and structural impact of the house on the surrounding landscape. On the other hand, he had to devise ingenious solutions to support the weight of the boxes and the pool, which holds 65 tons of water. The villa incorporates carefully planned internal supports and a drainage system to ensure the stability of the structure. In addition to these challenges, Villa Dall’Ava serves as a reflection on modern living and the relationship between architecture, space, and the environment. Large windows provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, integrating the interior with the exterior. This work by Koolhaas has become a significant example of contemporary architecture, combining functionality, aesthetics, and technical innovation.
