Charlety, a stadium in the city
At the Charlety Stadium, the architects have managed to reconcile opposites: the monumental grandeur of the stadium with that of the neighborhood, the life of a sports city with that of offices. Located at the Porte de Gentilly in Paris, squeezed between the ring road and the Boulevard des Maréchaux, the Charléty Stadium is bordered by the pavilions of the Cité universitaire, a cemetery and red brick HLM buildings. On this difficult eight-hectare site, marked by the fifty years of history of the old Sébastien-Charléty stadium, Henri Gaudin and his son Bruno have managed to implant the massive volume of a 20,000-seat covered stadium, as well as the sports facilities and offices commissioned by the City of Paris. In designing this large stadium with its gigantic ring shape, its elliptical stands and its aerial roof, the architects have been able to translate the energy that runs through the material and which is expressed in the sporting feat...
